Hi all,

I'm not sure whether this is more of a debate topic but if it turns out to be the case, I'll move the thread accordingly.

Anyway, I've always been curious as to why anime characters in general have really huge eyes. I mean, people in real life don't have eyes that big. lol I guess this is a mystery and I wonder if anyone has the answer. Wink

Well, actualy if I don't know about it too, but now anime character used to be drawen with a normal eyes. But I still think that a anime character were drawen with a huge eyes because it's give it a cute point. YOu know just like Disney cartoon character (mickey, Donald, and Guffy), they all drawn with a huge eyes too. And japanese like a cute thing. That's what I think though.

Hmm, I see.

Well, I heard that the eyes are drawn that size because Asian people think that their own eyes are too small. I'm not sure if that's true, though.

That sounds pretty racist XD
Kidding!

But seriously, I think the main reason the eyes are so focused on in anime and manga is that the eyes are the great tools for expression, and while people who dislike anime as an artform say that its generic "big eyes small mouth" the different ways people individualize eyes, be it within a style, or bretween styles, adds for variety.

Although Yuu is also right, there is definitely an aesthetic of cuteness to large eyes as well. Usually when comparing characters, the cute characters will have larger eyes while the beauty characters will have sharper narrower eyes. This is also just a form of expression created through eyes. The large eyes can portray an innocence, whether it is true or not, where a sharper more narrow eye can portray experience, knowledge, or maturity. Large eyes also have a warmth to them, when narrow eyes have a coldness to them.

There are many reasons for the large eye aesthetic, cute is one of them, expression is another, and trend is another, less important one. Anime as an artform has always had larger eyes from its beginings. People experiment with different things, but it is a major constant.

One thing I think would be worth discussing as well, though not about the eyes, is the face shape. When looking at a profile of an anime character, there are generally two different styles. The more realistic styles, where the profile is clearly defined, and the other style, in which you usually have the forehead curve, which bends down and then out and sometimes up to the tip of the nose, and then a reletively straight line to the tip of the chin, sometimes with a space, or bump for the lips.

That second facial style has me wondering more than size of eyes.
I threw together this image to illustrate my point between style one and two:

what Anarch wrote is true the eyes are like the main focus of emotions in anime's it started with kawaii or cute shojo manga (sailor moon for example) till it became a trademark of anime's having a big eyed and very cute characters.
