PostSubject: Book vs. Movie Versions   Sun Jun 01, 2008 5:34 am

Hi all,

I thought it was time to start another thread. I was thinking about this topic earlier today while I was teaching classes and this will be a fun one to debate about. Smile

So I'm curious to know whether you all prefer the classic book versions or the modern movie versions. For example, there are quite a lot of movies based on books out there nowadays. The notable ones include Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice. (I'm sure that there are more out there but those were the two that came off the top of my head.)

For me, I usually prefer the book versions. Notably, it's because I love to read and try to do so whenever possible. I believe that it's important to continually educate the mind. Also, when I watch the movie versions, they're usually disappointing (although not always). For example, when I watched the latest movie version of Pride and Prejudice (the one with Keira Knightley), I was quite disappointed. The movie left out a lot of what was in the book and it made the story inaccurate as a result. However, I did like the music from the movie so it wasn't a total loss. But in the BBC movie version of that same book, it was quite all right. I thought it was pretty accurate of the book. Then again, the BBC version was really long (6 hours, I think) so that may have had something to do with it.

Regarding the Harry Potter series, now I haven't read any of the books so I can't be a good judge of which is better. I liked the first three movies, though, especially the Prisoner of Azkaban. Regarding the fourth and fifth movies, though, my friends told me that they were disappointed by them because they left out quite a bit from what was in the books. But since I haven't read the books, I wouldn't have a clue which is better.

Anyway, I'm curious to hear your thoughts about which is better-book or movie version. Smile

I kinda like the movies, because I like to see how the characters look like and how they react in real.

98% of the time, book.

There ARE cases where sometimes the book a movie is taken from is a short story, and the movie has to be fleshed out and added to, I believe the Hannibal series of movies is one that does so, as well as a lot of movies based on Phillip K Dick's work.

But the majority of the time book > movie, manga > anime. etc.

phoenixgirl, you mentioned the Harry Potter series, and they are a case where every book has been better than the movies, even if the movies were all pretty good. 4 and 5 DID leave a lot out, but if you've seen the book, they are HUGE. If they did all of book 4 and 4, they would have taken 2 movies each, possibly 3 for book 4.

Hi Anarch,

Yup, I've seen how long books 4 and 5 of HP are. I haven't had a chance to read HP, simply because I am quite busy.

I suppose people will have different opinions about HP but personally, I'd prefer to have a two or three movies made from a long book rather than one movie where it leaves a lot out from the book.

The book allows exploration of the imagination while a movie can be good but its for those who want to see those words they see become a reality in a living new universe =3
